Due to his school, St. Francis Xavier, not having a basketball team for the 2021‐2022 season, Jordan Smith Jr., an 8th grader, rejoined Coach Joe Sego on St. Jerome's 14U Mid‐Atlantic Regional Team. Coach Sego remarked that Jordan was "the most dominating basketball player I have seen in my 27 years of coaching CYO. He was dunking by 7th grade!" Jordan was selected as the Daniel Delante Bell MVP by Sego for his dominant performance in the semi‐final and final game. Coach Sego adding to his reason for selecting Jordan stated that "more importantly, Jordan is a kid with an amazing personality, who was always humble and unselfish." Jordan will be attending Paul VI High School next year. Please join us in congratulating Jordan on a great season and wishing him the very best in his academic and athletic future!
During the 8oo Meter Run of the 2022 Track & Field Championship Meet, Emma Pham ran her way into the CYO Track & Field Record books with a time of 2:51.99! The previous record, 2:52.50, had been held for the past 23 years by Dominique Lockhart (St. Gabriel). Emma, a third grader at Mother of God School, started running with her mom in local 5k events when she was only 4 years old. With encouragement from her CYO coaches, Mrs. Garcia, Mrs. Schellhase and Mr. Taylor, Emma signed up to compete in the 2021 CYO Track & Field season and she became hooked! Emma has always loved competing and really enjoys all the practices. When Emma is not running track & field she swims competitively and runs with a club league level at Seven Locks Running Club. Please join us in congratulating Emma on a great season and wishing her the best in her academic and athletic future!
During the Long Jump event of the 2022 Track & Field Championship Meet, Patrick Gaskins (St. Pius X) leaped into the CYO Track & Field Record book with a distance of 12'00.75"! The previous record, 11'5", had been held for the past 7 years by Clayton Gary (St. Francis Intl.). Patrick's interest in Track & Field began while watching his two older sisters perform on the track. In 2019 he finally joined his sisters on the track as a 6U participant and really enjoyed the sport. Each week, he looked forward to the challenge of competing against others and himself. His hard work paid off this year and landed him in the Track & Field record books. Patrick is appreciative of all the support he has received from his coaches, teammates, family, and friends. He looks forward to competing again in the ’23 track & field season!
